Smart Dates automatically assigns dates to every section in your itinerary. When you change your trip dates or reorder your days, the chronological order updates on its own, no more manually editing section titles or recalculating days of the week.
Smart Dates can be used when building standalone itineraries and within the Trip Builder's Advanced Editor.
How It Works
Using the Advanced Editor in the Trip Builder
First, enter your trip dates in the Trip Basics tab. WeTravel will automatically create a dated section for each day of the trip.
Go to the Trip Page tab and click Switch to Advanced to open the editor.
Here, you will see a dated section for each date. You can toggle between Outline and Itinerary views, and choose a Landscape or Portrait layout.
Creating a Standalone Itinerary
First, start your itinerary by clicking Create New Itinerary or by using Smart Import. Then go to Settings and enter the trip dates.
Once the dates are entered, WeTravel will automatically create a dated section for each day of the trip.
Adding and Managing Content
You can add content to your dated sections by dragging items from your library or adding them directly within the section.
When dragging an entire section from the library into a dated section, a "Drop and merge items" prompt will appear. Releasing it merges all items from the library section into the existing dated section.
Duplicating a section creates a standard content section without a date pill. To assign it to a specific day, simply drag it into the desired dated section.
Tip: For the fastest rearranging experience, use the Outline view to reorder your items.
Important things to keep in mind:
Dated sections cannot be turned off.
You cannot directly add or delete dated sections. The total number of sections is automatically determined by your trip duration (set in Trip Basics or in Settings > Dates for itineraries).
Clearing a dated section (using the trash icon) removes its content but keeps the section as an empty placeholder.
Empty dated sections will not show up in the trip preview or traveler view.
Items inside a dated section automatically inherit that section's date — you do not need to enter a date on individual items.
Changing Your Trip Duration
Trip duration is always managed in Trip Basics (for the Trip Builder) or under Dates (for standalone itineraries).
Shortening a trip: WeTravel anchors at the start date, counts the new duration, and keeps that many dated sections. Any content that falls outside the new duration becomes a content section, and it is not deleted. You can keep it as an optional day, save it to your library, or delete it manually.
Extending a trip: New empty dated sections are added after the last dated section. You can fill them by dragging content in from the library or by creating new sections.
Changing trip dates: When changing the entire trip to different dates (e.g., moving from July to September), all sections and content carry over automatically, and the day of the week updates to match the new dates.
How Dates Are Displayed
Dates appear in the following places:
In the itinerary editor: Dates appear as a "pill" at the top of each section in both Landscape and Portrait layouts.
In the traveler view: The date pill stays visible at the top as travelers scroll, so they always know which day they are viewing. When a traveler opens the itinerary during their trip, it automatically opens to the current day.
In PDF exports: The date is displayed right over the section title. In the compact PDF version, it appears before the title for easy scanning.
Landscape view:
Portrait view:
Note: To keep your itinerary clean and avoid repetition, individual item dates (like hotel check-in/check-out) are hidden by default. If you still want them to show up, you can easily toggle them on.
Migrating an Existing Itinerary to Smart Dates
If you have existing itineraries with dates already selected, or if you enter dates in Settings, you will see empty dated sections appear at the top of your itinerary. There is no urgency to migrate — empty sections do not show in the traveler view, so nothing changes for your travelers until you are ready.
To migrate, drag and drop each day's content into its corresponding dated section. Once you have done this, the itinerary becomes fully dated. The next time you duplicate it, the dated sections will already be populated.
Handling Special Cases
Multi-Day Date Ranges
If your itinerary includes a block of days with shared content (for example, four beach days grouped into one section), it cannot be placed inside a single dated section without losing the multi-day structure.
The recommended workaround is to place it as a content section directly after the last individual day before the range. It will appear in the itinerary without a date pill.
Alternatively, you can choose not to use dated sections for that itinerary at all, or only use them for the portions of the trip with day-by-day content.
Flights and Date Mismatches
Flight items have their own fixed departure and arrival dates. If a flight's date does not match the dated section it is placed in, a review banner will appear at the top of the itinerary editor: "X flight item(s) require your review."
Clicking Review jumps you directly to the flagged flight. If the date mismatch is intentional (for example, a red-eye flight that departed the previous day), you can dismiss the alert by clicking Dismiss (all).
Note: The alert will reappear if additional flights with mismatching dates are added later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Smart Dates available on the Basic plan?
Yes. Smart Dates is available to all users on both the Basic and Pro plans.
Can I turn Smart Dates off?
No, it cannot be turned off. Smart Dates is on for all trips using the Advanced Editor and for all itineraries. However, if you prefer not to use it, simply leave the dated sections empty and move them to the bottom of the editor. They will not be visible to travelers as long as they are empty.
Does Smart Dates work for recurring trips?
Yes. For recurring trips, the sections display "Day 1", "Day 2", etc., rather than specific calendar dates, since the dates vary per booking.
What happens when I import an itinerary into the Trip Builder?
When you import an existing itinerary into a trip page, WeTravel will automatically use the dates from Trip Basics — not the dates from the original itinerary. This ensures the sections always reflect the correct trip dates.
What about itineraries without a day-by-day structure?
If you have a simple booking page without day-by-day sections, Smart Dates will place the dated sections at the bottom of the editor, out of the way. They will not appear in the traveler view as long as they are empty.
