How do I set up 2FA with an Authenticator app?

Learn how to set up app-based login step-by-step.

Updated this week

Google Authenticator, Authy, and Microsoft Authenticator, for example, are free security apps and one of the options available for login protection. They do not need an internet or mobile network connection, so you can log in to your account when traveling. An Authenticator app is also more reliable if you have problems receiving text messages on your device.

To enable this on your account, navigate to Account > Profile, then go to the Login and security section and click Enable next to Authenticator app.

Then, download an authenticator app like Google Authenticator from the App Store or Google Play. Once you've set up your account on the app, scan the barcode from your WeTravel account, then click "Continue."

If this is the second authentication method you’re adding after setting up a mobile number for one-time text codes, you’ll be prompted to verify that phone number first.

Next, enter the 6-digit verification code you see in your authenticator app. That's it—your two-factor authentication is now set up!

The next time you log in to WeTravel, you'll be asked to enter a 6-digit passcode from your authenticator app. This code is usually only valid for 60 seconds before a new one is generated.

If you can't scan the QR code or would prefer to receive the code via text message, click the "Can't scan the code?" button. Then, you can enter your phone number to continue setting up your two-factor authentication.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What happens if the verification codes aren't working, or you want to switch from one two-factor authentication method to another?

You can set up two authentication methods on your account (for example, a mobile number for one-time codes and an authenticator app). If you’re planning to travel or expect limited connectivity, we strongly recommend adding a secondary method in advance.

To add a second authentication method, you’ll first need to verify the method already on your account. If you ever lose access to one method, you can use the other verified method to regain access and update your settings.

To update or replace an existing authentication method, you’ll be asked to verify at least one of the authentication methods already set up on your account before making changes.

If verification codes aren’t arriving and you’re unable to add or update an authentication method at all, we can help you reset your two-factor authentication method. Please contact our support team at info@wetravel.com.

Do I need an internet connection to use the Authenticator app?

Yes — but only for certain actions. You’ll need an internet connection for:

  • Initial setup (scanning the QR code or adding an account)

  • Account recovery or re-adding accounts

  • Syncing, if you use the Google Authenticator cloud sync feature

Once set up, generating authentication codes does not require an internet connection.

🚨 Important: Google Authenticator codes are time-based. If your phone’s clock is out of sync, codes may fail.

👍 Best practice: Enable automatic date & time in your phone’s settings.

Note: It may take 24–48 hours to reset access internally once all required information has been received.
